2017 Gulf Island Pond Open - Hogue/Hogue Win
Sunday August 20, 2017
Once again any of the 34 teams competing in the Gulf Island Pond Open had to deal with competting against 2 of the teams known to Maine anglers as "The Hogues".
Since the first event 20 plus years ago it is well known that one of the Hogue teams would be the team to beat. In 2015 and 2016 the team of Mike and Fran Hogue walked away with the win even setting the winning tournament weight of 22.53 for 7 bass, their 5.00 lb largemouth topping out their heavy bag in 2016.
Athough Mike and Fran Hogue did not win in 2017 they did finish 3rd with 19.53, another great finish for them....congrats!
Long time angler Ed Hogue, who at times would compete in the open with his wife when his son Laurence was not available to fish an event, fished with his son Laurence.
The team of Laurence and Ed Hogue usually set up a milk run fishing several areas in a day fishing the entire length of the Gulf Island Pond section of the Androscoggin River. Today Laurence and Ed Hogue weighed in 7 largemouth bass for 19.82 edging out the team of John Volkernick and Rick Baker who managed a mixed bag of smallmouth and largemouth bass for their 7 fish limit of 19.79 on the day. Congrats to the top 3 teams today on another exciting weigh in all within a few ounces of each other.
Other noteables on the day was Laurence and Ed Hogue cashing in on the Portland Yacht Services "Top Finisher" Program. Big smallmouth weighing in at 4.67 was caught by the team of Matt Jannarone and Clayton Grimm. Big largemouth weighed in at 3.85 caught by the team of Delicino and Bill Centra. The 50/50 raffle was won by Rick Baker. The 2018 Free Entry raffle was won by John Volkernick.
Community Credit Union was on hand to supply teams with a complimentsry BBQ lunch, any donations made went to Maine Credit Unions Campaign to End Hunger which through Maine credit unions raised over $600,000 in 2016 and 7 million since 1990!
Several years ago the members of Androscoggin Bassmasters chose the Children's Miracle Network and the Barbara Bush Chikdren's Hospital at Maine Medical Center as the charity to align with the Gulf Island Pond event. Once again a donation from proceeds of the event will be donated bringing the overall total to over $9000 since the tournaments inception.
2018 will be this events 25th Anniversary, members are working hard to bring our supporters one of the biggest and best tournaments we have ever had.
Thank you all for supporting this event not only this year but in the years past years and we hope to see you in the many years to come.
