Unboxing the HyperX Cloud III Wireless is a refreshingly straightforward experience. Inside, you'll find only the essentials: the headset itself, a charging cable, a detachable microphone, and a USB-C dongle (with a handy Type-A adapter).
This headset prioritizes utility, skipping the flashy RGB lighting and unnecessary features that often clutter gaming headsets. HyperX focuses on what truly matters: comfort. The earcups are generously sized, housing angled drivers and wrapped in a soft, leather-like material with ample padding. This is a huge win for gamers who spend hours in the game. The headband, as expected from HyperX, feels flexible yet sturdy. The smooth friction slider for adjustment minimizes hair-catching, though those with very fine hair might still feel a slight pinch.
Upgrading from the classic HyperX Cloud II, the Cloud III Wireless feels like a subtle but significant improvement. It provides that familiar, worn-in feeling that the Cloud II is known for.
When it comes to on-headphone controls, the HyperX Cloud III Wireless keeps things simple. Most essential controls are handled on your computer, so you won't miss a bunch of tiny knobs and dials for obscure settings. A minimalist approach is preferred here, eliminating the need to fumble for the right switch during gameplay. Conveniently placed on the left earcup are a circular mic mute button, the power/pair button, a volume wheel, and a bindable circular button on the right side.
But here's where it gets controversial...
In terms of audio, the HyperX Cloud III shines in gaming. For casual music listening, it's not quite top-tier. It has a nice, deep bass response and clear highs, but the mids feel a bit restrained. However, for gaming, it's a completely different story. This headset is brilliant. The details in the audio aren't just present; they are properly discernible, which is crucial.
It also excels with directional sound in games like Battlefield 6, even before you enable DTS Spatial Sound. The DTS Headphone:X virtual surround sound adds depth to the directional audio, but it's not a make-or-break feature.
And this is the part most people miss...
The built-in microphone performs well, but it's not exceptional. It's the same mic found on the Cloud III Wireless. Vocals are clear and reasonably full-sounding, but the recording volume is low, even with the gain maxed out in the HyperX software. In practice, squad members in Battlefield 6 had no issues hearing or understanding me, but they weren't exactly praising my audio quality either. It's functional, but not impressive.
Battery life is equally impressive, offering up to 120 hours of gaming via the dongle or nearly 200 hours via Bluetooth. This is longer than most competing devices and more than enough for long trips without needing to pack a charger.
So, is it a good gaming headset? Absolutely! While the price tag of RM769 might seem high, considering its full features and excellent sound quality, it remains a worthwhile purchase for anyone looking to seriously upgrade their gaming setup.
