John Lewis Christmas Ad 2023: Creators React to Viral Success! Behind the Scenes (2025)

The creators of the heartwarming John Lewis Christmas advert are overwhelmed by the incredible response it has received. This year's campaign, titled "Where Love Lives," tells a story of a teenage boy's journey to express his emotions for his dad through the power of music. The ad, crafted by Ollie Agius and Pete Ioulianou, alumni of the University of Lincoln, has been widely praised for its exploration of masculinity and emotion.

"We're absolutely thrilled with the reaction. It's a first for us, and we're blown away by the amazing response," Mr. Agius shared.

The advert, which many consider the official kick-off to the festive season, showcases a dad opening a special Christmas gift - a vinyl record titled "Where Love Lives." As a reimagined version of Alison Limerick's song plays, we see flashbacks of the father dancing in a 90s club and tender moments with his son as a baby. In the present day, the man embraces his son, and the powerful end line appears: "If you can't find the words, find the gift."

But here's where it gets controversial... Some analysts suggest that the advert responds to the "crisis of masculinity," drawing comparisons to the hit Netflix drama "Adolescence."

Mr. Ioulianou reveals that the creative process began with this very end line, emphasizing the idea of expressing feelings through thoughtful gifts.

"As a nation, we often struggle to express our emotions. A gift can be a powerful way to show someone you care," he explains.

When asked about the song choice, Mr. Agius said, "We wanted a nostalgic track that would take dads back in time, reminding them of those joyful moments on the dance floor. We found an all-time classic that makes people feel good, and the lyrics perfectly captured our vision."

The creative duo, who are now associate creative directors at Saatchi & Saatchi, spent eight months meticulously crafting this ad. Speaking about the pressure and expectations that come with creating such a high-profile campaign, Mr. Ioulianou said, "It's an honor and a privilege, despite the pressure."

Mr. Agius humorously added, "I think my dad's relentless sharing has contributed to its viral success! He's been a proud dad, and we're overjoyed with the outcome."

Dave Pettitt, a senior lecturer in creative advertising at the University of Lincoln, expressed his pride in seeing Ollie and Pete's names attached to such a culturally impactful campaign.

Mr. Ioulianou, who had never heard of Lincolnshire before attending the university, said, "Lincoln is a beautiful city with fond memories. The cathedral, Steep Hill, and The Engine Shed - it's a lovely place."

Mr. Agius agreed, "It's wonderful to revisit and see the city's evolution."

And this is the part most people miss... The impact of this advert extends beyond its emotional narrative. It showcases the talent and creativity of these advertising alumni, highlighting the power of storytelling in advertising.

So, what do you think? Is this ad a powerful exploration of masculinity, or is it just a clever marketing strategy? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
