Kimi Antonelli's Sao Paulo Grand Prix: A Weekend of Near Perfection?
Kimi Antonelli is on a roll! After securing P2 in qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, he's setting his sights on a strong finish in Sunday's race. But can he convert his promising positions into a victory?
Antonelli's weekend has been nothing short of impressive. He's consistently demonstrated his speed, starting alongside polesitter Lando Norris, just as he did in Saturday's Sprint race. He managed to turn that starting position into a second-place finish in the Sprint. Now, he's aiming to replicate that success in the main event.
During qualifying, Antonelli's final lap in Q2 put him a mere 0.174 seconds behind Norris. Reflecting on his performance, he admitted, "Yeah, I mean a bit annoying that we’re P2 again!" But he quickly followed up with a positive outlook, acknowledging the challenging conditions, especially the unpredictable wind. He felt that despite some minor mistakes, he secured a good result and has "a lot to play for" on Sunday.
Antonelli's comfort with the W16 has been evident from the start of the weekend. He's been enjoying the track and the enthusiastic crowd, which has given him extra motivation. He's optimistic about finishing the weekend on a high note.
But here's where it gets interesting...
On the other side of the garage, George Russell faced a more challenging qualifying session. He struggled with grip and finished in P6. Russell explained that he couldn't get his tires working properly. He sees P6 as "damage limitation" considering how difficult the session was.
Looking ahead to Sunday's race, Russell is realistic about his chances of reaching the podium. He hopes to move forward but acknowledges the speed of the cars ahead. He aims to overtake the Racing Bulls car in front of him, but he anticipates a tough fight for a podium finish.
